Oklahoma head football coach Lincoln Riley announced Monday that quarterback Baker Mayfield will not start or be a captain in the team’s final home game against West Virginia Saturday afternoon.
The decision comes after Mayfield’s behavior during the Sooners win at Kansas this past Saturday. Mayfield made a gesture at the Kansas bench and had a few words for fans in the stands.
Riley said the decision was a difficult one and did not say when Mayfield would enter the game or how much playing time he would see against the Mountaineers.
Mayfield is a frontrunner for the Heisman trophy and Oklahoma is in position to play in the Big 12 Championship Game and could make the College Football Playoff.
