Oklahoma Highway Patrol officials Sunday morning said that a suspect is in custody after an OHP trooper was shot during a traffic stop overnight in Woodward.

Trooper Austin Ellis was conducting a traffic stop for a possible seat belt violation around 12:30 a.m. near 34th and Oklahoma Avenue in Woodward. The suspect, identified as Arturro Ramirez, failed to yield and pulled into the Days Inn. Ramirez then fired at Ellis and Ellis fired back. Ramirez then drove away with Ellis in pursuit.

OHP Tactical team was called out as authorities originally thought Ramirez was barricaded in a Woodward residence, but later investigation showed that his whereabouts were unknown.

At approximately 9:20 a.m., OHP Tactical and local law enforcement apprehended Ramirez along Highway 270 near Kwick Rentals in Woodward.

Ellis was flown to OU Medical Center with some internal bleeding and was said to be in good spirits, according to OHP Captain Stan Walker. The bullet that hit Ellis hit his bulletproof vest.
